Malala Yousafzai is a well-known youngest ever Nobel Prize recipient from Pakistan. She is known for her dedication to education and women’s rights.
She was born on 12th of July 1997 in Mingora, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. Her father Ziauddin Yousafzai is an educational activist, and she was very inspired by her father’s humanitarian work. Malala Yousafzai’s father was himself a passionate education advocate who ran a learning institution in the city. She had also mentioned that her father told her the stories of how she would walk into classes even before she could talk and acted as if she was the teacher.
From her younger age she had developed a thirst for knowledge and became a social activist when she was very young. She is a proactive and confident person who believes in speaking the truth and even in front of those who are against her but in a way which will not hurt anyone. At the young age of 12 she wrote a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC Urdu describing her life during the Tehrik- i- Taliban Pakistan’s occupation of Swat.
Malala stood up against the Taliban and was strong minded to go to school with a strong belief in her right to education. She selflessly worked towards education of women and children in her native Swat Valley in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which is located in the northwest of Pakistan and during the time when Tehrik-I Taliban Pakistan had banned girls from attending the school.
Adam B Ellick, journalist of “New York Times” made a documentary about her life as the Pakistani military intervened in the region. She gained immense popularity after giving an interview in print as well as on television.
Malala Yousafzai was also nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize by the activist Desmond Tutu. She was not scared of questioning things which she found were not supported by enough details and done differently in her culture. Even though she was encircled by people with strong beliefs in her society, it did not come her way in working towards women’s rights as she wanted to change the status quo women in her community.
Once she was travelling in a bus from school when two of the Taliban stopped the bus. One of the young Talib asked for Malala by name, and fired three shots at her. She was seriously wounded. On that same day she was airlifted to a Pakistani military hospital and after four days to an intensive care unit in Birmingham, England.
After arriving in the United Kingdom, Malala was taken out of a medically induced coma. Even though she had to go through multiple surgeries, fortunately she had not suffered any major brain damage. In the year 2013, after long treatment and therapy, Malala Yousafzai was able to begin attending school in Birmingham.
Malala who is now located in Birmingham is an active supporter of education as a fundamental social and economic right. With the help of Malala Fund and with her own voice, she indeed remains a great global advocate for the power of education and for girls.
